This half term in Year 1 the children have enjoyed a range of new mini-projects. During Engage week they explored new DT and Art mini-projects. In their Art mini-project 'Funny Faces and Fabulous Features' they looked at a range of portraits, developed their knowledge of colour and used cutting and sticking skills to create a funny face portrait collage! In the DT mini-project 'Shade and Shelter', they learned about what materials are, and how best we can use them. They tested some materials to find out their properties, and then used that knowledge to design a shelter for a pet which would fill a set of requirements. They even had a go at building a mock-up of the designs using junk modelling!
They learned about different features, both physical and human, as well as exploring maps and directional language in their Geography mini-project 'Our Wonderful World'. Children even got their first chance to use the ChromeTabs in class to help them to explore Google Earth and find Sutton, looking to see what different features are near us and whether that makes Sutton a village, a town or a city.
They also really enjoyed another of our mini-projects 'Human Senses'. They learned about our five senses and what they are used for and completed a range of experiments designed to put them to the test! These included counting objects only by touch, identifying scents only by smelling, and dropping a coin into a moving cup without using their eyes. They loved getting to try the experiments and seeing if their friends could do them too!
In Literacy the children have completed their first story retell using a favourite story of theirs, Supertato. They practised by acting out parts of the story, retelling the story verbally and writing about the individual characters before tackling the story retell over a few days to write a series of sentences which retell the whole story including the beginning, middle and end. The stories were amazing!
One of the highlights of our half term was the visit we had from the Punch and Judy show which linked to our History topic 'Childhood'. They absolutely loved the silly humour and getting to participate by shouting things like 'HE'S BEHIND YOU!' They absolutely loved this glimpse into one example of entertainment from the 1950s.
In PE children have enjoyed their time outside with our coaches. They have been working on their Real PE Physical Cog by using their agility and speed when moving around jumping from hoop to hoop and rolling and collecting larger and smaller balls.
