Art

This term the children have been looking at the use of different shading techniques such as contour lines, stippling, scribbling and cross-hatching . Furthermore, the children have been exploring a range of different artists from Picasso to Rembrandt. Also, the children have been introduced to creating tone, depth and shadows in their artwork through using white oil pastels on black card and converting coloured pictures to black and white pictures. The children have taken black and white photographs and used pencil, pen and ink wash to reimagine their photographs in a shaded drawing.

Literacy

This term, Year 5’s enjoyed their diary writing in Literacy. In class, they have been reading ‘The Secret Garden’ and focused on the chapter where Mary found the garden. As part of their writing journey, the children looked at features of a diary, adverbials of manner and time as well as ‘show not tell’. They explored role playing to observe actions showing emotions which they could include in their writing. Children then went on to plan their diary (using their virtual classroom to help with vocabulary etc), draft it and edit their work before publishing it on coffee stained paper to identify with the period of when the story was written.

Wisley

As part of their new topic ‘Sow, Grow and Farm’, Year 5 went on a trip to RHS Wisley Gardens. They took part in a workshop which enabled them to explore different plants (including 1 that smelt of lemons), look at the tallest tree in the world and forage for different parts of a plant life cycle. The children enjoyed the opportunity to learn outdoors and explore the world around them. They then also explored more of the garden, visiting the glasshouse (which they found extremely peaceful and exciting) and different parts of the gardens including the walled garden and the oak walk. Overall, the children had a brilliant day learning outdoors and exploring the world around them.
